Sandy's Artist Statement

Growing up, I wanted a career in art. I have always loved to draw and paint. As with the lives of many people, my plans were changed along the way.
I became a church organist at the age of 15. My next job came several years later when my two children were in school fulltime. I volunteered at Timothy Lutheran Preschool in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This volunteer job turned into one as teacher aide, then co-teacher, and eventually teacher/director. During this time, I was a church organist, and I continue to fulfill this role to this day. I retired from the preschool after more than thirty years, and I was finally able to get back to my first love… art.
I started an art club at the local senior center. As a preschool teacher, I had written some Christmas programs for the children. I thought one of these programs would make a nice children’s book, so with the encouragement of my fellow artists, I wrote my first book, …But Little Things: A First Christmas Story. That is how I became an author. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to keep writing other children’s books.
